The Reel Life Foundation

The Reel Life Foundation is a charity founded in Autumn 2017 to support and promote the distinctive musical traditions of Orkney, Scotland.

In 2018 we were awarded a Calor Community grant for an Music Instrument bank!

It was launched with a well attended “Come and Try” event in October.

Since then we have introduced popular free fortnightly Slow Sessions and published a book of tunes and accompanying CD to use at the sessions.

We are also involved in the Orcadian Summer Concerts at The Reel raising money for local charities.

Orkney is an archipelago of approximately 70 islands, (of which 20 are inhabited), situated 10 miles off the north coast of Scotland. The city of Kirkwall is the capital and lies at 58.9847°N, 2.9622°W.

Most of the 21,000 strong population live on the largest island, The Mainland, though many of the inner and outer islands of Orkney also support thriving communities, each with its own distinct identity.

Links between the various islands are maintained by air services from Kirkwall or by ferries from Kirkwall, Tingwall, Stromness and Houton.
