Orkney is an archipelago of approximately 70 islands, (of which 20 are inhabited), situated 10 miles off the north coast of Scotland. The city of Kirkwall is the capital and lies at 58.9847°N, 2.9622°W.

Most of the 21,000 strong population live on the largest island, The Mainland, though many of the inner and outer islands of Orkney also support thriving communities, each with its own distinct identity.

Links between the various islands are maintained by air services from Kirkwall or by ferries from Kirkwall, Tingwall, Stromness and Houton.
